Ex-Md. Governor's Grandson Arrested in Drug Case

The grandson of former Maryland Gov. Harry Hughes has been arrested on accusations that he stole more than $250,000 from his grandfather to fuel a heroin addiction over a two-year period.

Andrew Douglas White, 26, of Denton, was arraigned in Caroline County Circuit Court on Aug. 27 on charges of theft, obtaining property from a vulnerable adult, and possession and distribution of heroin. He was released on $50,000 unsecured bond, The Star Democrat of Easton reported.

Reached at his home Wednesday, Hughes, 87, said his grandson never stole his bank cards or money.

"I told the judge that he had permission to use my card,'' Hughes said. He declined to comment further.

White's Glen Burnie attorney, Peter O'Neill, did not immediately respond to a call for comment Wednesday.

Court documents allege that White got money from Hughes by telling him he needed it for diabetes medication and a prescription for suboxone, a medication used to treat opioid dependence.

Police said pharmacy records show White's medications were mostly covered by insurance during the period he's accused of stealing from his grandfather, at a monthly out-of-pocket cost of less than $100.
