Church Investigates Bishop Who Fatally Struck Cyclist

An official with the Diocese of Maryland says the Episcopal Church has begun disciplinary proceedings against a Baltimore-based bishop who fatally struck a cyclist with her car.

Episcopal Diocese of Maryland spokeswoman Sharon Tillman says national church leaders want to know whether Bishop Suffragan Heather Cook violated church law. They launched an investigation after a complaint was filed with the church late last week.

Cook is the diocese's first female bishop. She was ordained as the second-ranking bishop in the diocese in September.

On Dec. 27, Cook struck and killed Tom Palermo as he was riding his bicycle in Baltimore. Police say the driver left the scene for 20 minutes before returning.

No criminal charges have been filed against Cook, but police say the incident is still under investigation.
