Car Strikes, Kills Man in Wheelchair in Prince George's County

A man in a motorized wheelchair was struck and killed by a car in Prince George's County Friday night, police said.

The crash happened about 8:30 p.m. in the 9100 block of Stuart Lane in Clinton, Maryland, police said. The man, identified as Abdul Jama, 49, of Clinton, Maryland, was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Investigators are trying to determine if Jama was in a crosswalk at the time of the crash.

On Sunday, multiple residents of the nearby Clinton Nursing & Rehabilitation Center at 9211 Stuart Lane confirmed Jama lived at the nursing home and he was returning to the center when he was struck. Police said the driver remained at the scene and was cooperating with authorities.

Residents said something needs to be done about the road, because there are no sidewalks and no public transportation for them to get around.

"The wheelchair has got just as much right as a vehicle, because we don't have no sidewalk," said Dennis Foster, a resident at the nursing home. "They should have buses running. People [are] confined in their house because they don't have a car."

The nursing home gave residents reflective vests after the crash, residents said.

Residents said they aren't going to stop riding the roads on their scooters, because it gives them a sense of freedom.

A supervisor Clinton Nursing & Rehabilitation Center declined to comment to News4.
