The one day of the year bicyclists can get views of D.C. normally reserved for cars returns this Sunday.
DC Bike Ride, an annual event that "celebrate[s] life on two wheels," offers a 20-mile course on streets in downtown D.C. The roads are blocked off from cars, giving participants the opportunity to take in the sights of the nation's capital without the usual bustling traffic.
The ride starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m. on Mother's Day. The ride starts in West Potomac Park and ends on Pennsylvania Avenue. You can view the entire 2017 course here.
Along the course, activities and entertainment will make your ride even more enjoyable, including performances from the Eastern Sr. High School Drumline, Dupont Brass Band and more.
When you're done with your ride, stick around for a finish line festival, open for all DC Bike Ride participants and spectators to enjoy. You'll find DJs and other entertainment, activities and food trucks.
If that bike ride makes you sore, stretch and relax at the post-ride yoga class at 10:30 a.m.
DC Bike Ride is kid-friendly, too! Children 3 to 7 years old can ride free if they ride along with an adult. Children ages 8 to 13 may ride on the course as long as they are accompanied by an adult. A kids' zone will offer face painting, a juggler, games and cotton candy.
Proceeds from the ride will benefit Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) and their "Vision Zero" initiative to end traffic-related deaths and injuries.
Adult registration costs $70 and up; kids and teens ages 8-18 can register for $35.
