Dulles International Airport Opens First New Runway Since 1962

Transportation officials hope runway eases congestion

CHANTILLY, Va. -- The first new runway at Dulles International Airport since 1962 is officially open for business.

The first flight from the new runway took off about 8:20 a.m. Thursday. It was an American Airlines flight bound for Los Angeles.

The $355 million runway joins three existing runways at Dulles. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said at a dedication ceremony that the runway will help alleviate congestion during the busy holiday travel season.

But air traffic controllers at Dulles said the benefit will be minimal because the airport has not yet built all the taxiways to allow efficient use of the runway.
