Diet Cheat Day: Taste of 8th

Eat your hearts out!

Just remember, calories are merely an imaginary concept. At least, that's what you can try to tell yourself on Saturday, May 1. That's when Barracks Row is hosting its annual sampling celebration, the Taste of Eighth, at restaurants along 8th Street S.E. between D and I streets. From 1-4 p.m., nosh at any/all of 14 diverse eateries and don't leave until you're vowing to never eat again.

Barracks Row is home to a culturally diverse dining scene, including perennial brunch fave Belga Café, the new Cava Mezze and its Greek small plates, and Starfish Café (539 8th St. S.E.), which dishes out exotic blends of the Caribbean. Other options include soul food, Asian fusion, Italian and Tex-Mex.

Now here’s the challenge: How do you taste them all? Wear comfy shoes, roomy pants and don't be afraid to plan your route in advance. Visit each restaurant and taste each dish, of course! Take the Eastern Market Metro and walk south on 8th Street to experience a culinary food fest like no other.

Tasting tickets are $5 each or five for $20. You can buy them the day of the event at the Barracks Row Main Street ticket booth near 8th and E streets S.E.
