NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) — Authorities are searching for a missing man after a canoe capsized in a lake behind an apartment complex in Newport News.
Local media outlets report Deputy Chief Kenneth Lay says crews were called to the scene at the Lochaven Apartments on Wednesday evening.
Lay says officials were told there were two men in the water when the canoe overturned. One man was rescued by bystanders, and the other person was not found.
The search for the second boater was called off at midnight.
Officials returned to the scene Thursday morning to continue their search effort, as boat crews scanned the water using sonar equipment.
Authorities believe the unidentified man is in his 50s.
