Forbes Latest Longtime Republican Felled by Insurgent Wave

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Randy Forbes became the latest senior Virginia Republican felled by an insurgent campaign, another stark reminder that seniority in Washington and loads of campaign cash don’t guarantee victories in GOP primaries.

Forbes lost Tuesday to state Del. Scott Taylor in the 2nd Congressional District GOP primary.

Though heavily outspent, Taylor won with an outsider’s message that Washington D.C. is broken and longtime congressmen like Forbes are the reason why.

Political analysts said the defeat shows that voters don’t put much stock anymore on campaigns based on seniority in Congress and the ability to influence federal spending — like the one Forbes ran. The 2nd Congressional District includes the Norfolk Naval Base, the largest in the world, and its economy is heavily reliant on federal spending.
