Top Picks for St. Paddy's Day (and Night)

THURSDAY, MARCH 17:

  • P.J. Clarke's (1600 K St. N.W.) brings their 128-year old St. Patrick's Day tradition to D.C. for the first time ever. Head downtown (11 a.m.-1:30 a.m.) for $4 Guinness pints, $6 shots of Jameson, traditional Irish fare and the chance to win a 2011 URAL Sidecar Motorcycle. You can also expect a pipe-and-drums band... oh, and Redskins cheerleaders. A portion of the event's proceeds will benefit the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. We'll have a Niteside reporter attending, so check out Niteside the morning after for the complete rundown.
  • DC 101's Kegs & Eggs is great event if you don't have to actually, you know, work on Thursday. Head out to the 9:30 Club (815 V St. N.W.) by 7 a.m. for a free concert featuring Switchfoot, the Gracious Few and Carbon Leaf.
  • Againn (1099 New York Ave. N.W.) hosts an All Day St Patrick's Day Happy Hour, with live music from O'Kane Mutiny (6 p.m.-midnight), a special St. Patty's Day pub menu, drink specials including Irish car bombs (of course) and an outdoor bar. Specials include Harp, Guinness, Smithwick's and Kilkenny drafts, plus shots of Irish whiskey from $5 to $6. A $5 cover charge kicks in at 4 a.m.
  • Fado Irish Pub (808 7th St. N.W.) lets you start off your St Patrick's Day right -- i.e., with a pint of Guinness at 7a.m., should you dare. Celtic rock band 40 Thieves performs at 3 p.m., followed by Irish dancers throughout the afternoon and then the Lloyd Dobbler Effect at 9 p.m.
  • Ireland's Four Courts (2051 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington) opens its doors at 10 a.m., dishing up Irish lunch specials and live music all day on the main stage and inside their heated tent.
  • St. Paddy's Day staple Kelly's Irish Times (14 F St. N.W.) opens at 10 a.m. and will host live music.
  • Up for a drive? Belfast native Seamus Kennedy performs at the Blackrock Center For the Arts (12901 Town Commons Drive, Germantown, Md.), bringing a storyteller's flare, a tricolor guitar and a bodhrán drum to the stage. 7:30 p.m.; $28.

MONDAY-TUESDAY, MARCH 21-22:

  • Just can't get enough of the celebration? Gaelic Storm performs at the Birchmere (3701 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria) after the rest of the St. Paddy's fun has died down. They're not just a band that performed in "Titanic" -- the group has become a big name in the Celtic music world. 7:30 p.m.; $35.
