A water main break overnight caused a waterfall over I-395 in Arlington County, Va.

Arlington County officials said they first got a call about the water main break shortly after midnight Thursday morning.

A steady steam poured from the 34th Street Bridge down to the northbound side of the interstate. Virginia State Police closed off one lane to traffic. An NBC Washington content producer captured video of the scene at about 1:15 a.m. Crews were able to patch up a broken valve at about 2:30 a.m.

Arlington County officials tell NBC Washington that old pipes were likely to blame. Water utility crews plan to call a contractor to make permanent repairs.
