Washington Monument Elevator Breaks Again With Visitors at Top

The Washington Monument is closed again Wednesday night because of an elevator malfunction, a day after the elevator broke with dozens of people at the top of the monument.

Twenty-three visitors walked more than 500 feet down the stairs of the monument Wednesday, a National Park Service spokesman said at 5:45 p.m.

The monument will remain closed for the rest of Wednesday as a crew works to determine the cause of the problem.

Two pregnant women needed to be carried down the stairs of the monument Tuesday night, when the elevator broke when 63 people were at the top of the structure.

Elevator problems have closed the monument several times in the past few years, most recently in June.
