Fairfax County has counted more than half of its precincts in the recount for attorney general, with Democrat Mark Herring widening his lead over Republican Mark Obenshain.
As of 11 a.m. Tuesday, Herring had gained an additional 391 votes and Obenshain had picked up 135. That's a net gain of 256 votes for Herring.
Fairfax County is critical in the recount. It is the state's largest jurisdiction and represents more than 40 percent of all the optical scan ballots cast in Virginia. Those ballots are being examined by hand.
The rest of the state joined Fairfax County and the cities of Chesapeake and Alexandria on Tuesday in the recount.
All jurisdictions in the state have a Wednesday deadline to complete the recount.
