Teen Shot Woman, Son After Being Teased, Charging Documents Say

The 17-year-old boy charged in the death of a southeast D.C. woman shot the victim and her son after being teased by the younger boy earlier that day, charging documents state. 

Police say Kevin Lee was in a dispute with his 12-year-old neighbor when he went to the younger boy's Congress Street apartment with a gun Tuesday. Shots were fired, and both boys were wounded, along with the 12-year-old's mother, 31-year-old Tenika Fontanelle.

Fontanelle died from her injuries at an area hospital. 

The 12-year-old victim told police that he was walking with his friends when he ran into Lee, his neighbor. The group of younger boys made fun of Lee and his friend, throwing sticks and rocks at the two, according to court documents. 

At some point, Lee told the boys to stop throwing things at him or they were going to "make him do something to them," the charging documents state. 

The 12-year-old told police that he and his friends ran away after seeing Lee pull something from his waist area. However, the group returned to see whether Lee really had a weapon. The boy said he ran home after Lee pulled out the weapon again and started chasing them. 

Several witnesses told police that Lee went to the victims' home, where he is accused of getting involved in a physical confrontation with Fontanelle and her son. At some point, shots were fired. and Fontanelle was struck in the chest, her 12-year-old son was shot in the arm, and Lee suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. 

Lee has been charged as an adult with second-degree murder while armed. 

A judge ordered Lee to remain in custody pending a preliminary hearing Sept. 1.
