Substation Failure Knocks Out Power for Thousands

Between 2,400 and 2,700 D.C. customers remained without power about 6:30 p.m. Monday after an equipment failure at a substation Sunday.

Pepco said two power lines from the Benning Road Substation are not working and the outage affects Logan Circle, Chinatown, Bloomingdale, U Street corridor and Foggy Bottom. The problem started around noon and is expected to be resolved by 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Power was restored to the Shaw Metro Station Monday afternoon. The station remained open during the outage, though all escalators and elevators were out of service.

The following zipcodes are impacted: 20001, 20004, 20005, 20006, 20009, 20036, 20037, 20045, 20052.

Pepco said they will try to get people back on temporary power, but the problem at the substation needs a permanent fix.
