St. Mary's College Swim Coach Charged With Possessing Child Pornography

The head swim coach at St. Mary's College of Maryland was arrested Friday after investigators allegedly found pornographic images of children in his home.

Andre Rudolph Barbins, 45, of Solomons, Maryland, is charged with one count of child pornography and one count of displaying obscene matter to a minor, Maryland State Police said.

On Friday, investigators searched Barbins' home in the 200 block of Pelagic Lane and seized digital media devices containing images of child pornography, police said. He was then arrested.

Police have not specified why their investigation led them to Barbins and have not provided further details of the case.

Barbins is being held pending a hearing by the District Court Commissioner.

St. Mary's College, which is located in southern Maryland, released a statement Tuesday after learning of his arrest.

"The College is taking all steps necessary to protect the safety of its campus and community, and is cooperating fully with law enforcement," officials said in a statement in part.

Assistant Coach Hattie Schiavone has assumed coaching responsibilities.

The school did not comment further, calling it a personnel matter.
