A D.C. Council candidate wants the District to put the brakes on one of its speed cameras.
The Rev. Bill Bennett is asking the city to stop ticketing drivers busted for speeding on Branch Avenue, near Pennsylvania Avenue in Southeast Washington.
Bennett claims the camera is located at the bottom of a steep hill, and unfairly targets drivers who can’t afford the $125 fine that comes with the speeding ticket. He says the camera doesn’t make the neighborhood any safer, either.
The Rev. Willie Wilson, another prominent member of the clergy in the Southeast, joined Bennett in condemning the speed camera.
Police told News4 residents in the neighborhood requested the speed camera. They released this statement and said the camera makes it easier for children and senior citizens to cross.
Bennett is running against Ward 7 Councilmember Yvette Alexander in April’s Democratic primary.
