Pilot Dies in Small Plane Crash in Western Virginia

The pilot of a small plane died after crashing in Rockingham County, Virginia, during a training flight over the weekend.

He has been identified as 49-year-old Bernhard Helmut Charlemagne, of Frederick, Maryland.

Charlemagne died at the scene, said Virginia State Police.

A 51-year-old student pilot was also on board at the time of the crash. He was injured and transported to the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Their plane was found in two pieces at the remote crash site five miles north of Route 33 in the George Washington National Forest, police said.

The plane left from Frederick Municipal Airport, in Maryland, on Saturday for an instructional flight. It flew to Martinsburg, West Virginia and then to Winchester, Virginia, and was headed for Hot Springs, Virginia. The last contact with the plane was at about 7 p.m. Saturday.

It was reported overdue and was found shortly before 7 a.m. Sunday.

Virginia State Police said the plane was a 2003 Cessna 172S single-engine, fixed-wing aircraft, owned by Victor Tango Aviation LLC of Wilmington, Delaware.

Virginia State Police, along with the FAA and the NTSB, are investigating the cause of the crash.
