‘Shoot or Don't Shoot?' Asks New Police Training Video

New interactive software allows officers to practice in a variety of unpredictable crime situations

Whether it's a shooting, a traffic stops, a domestic dispute or even a hostage crisis, training can make the difference in life-or-death situations that require police officers to make split-second decisions.

Now Prince George's County Police have a new interactive software program that gives them a critical advantage in a crisis.

Scenario-based training is "as real as you can get," said one officer.

The Judgmental Enhancement Training System, or JETS, was actually designed for the Department of Homeland Security.

It allows officers to practice in a variety of unpredictable crime situations. The officers learn communication skills to de-escalate a scene before shots are fired.

Officers can use less lethal options, including tasers, batons and pepper spray, but the situation can intensify when there's an imminent threat of death, forcing an officer to take action.

Last year, there were 15 police-involved shootings in Prince George's County. Three officers were shot.
