Rolling Back on Parking Fees

Get ready to save some cash parking in Old Town Alexandria, Va.

The city council voted unanimously Tuesday night to roll back parking fees. It’s a 50-cent savings from $1.75 to $1.25 an hour.

The rate went up three months ago to increase the turnover of parking spaces and boost garage business.

While the intentions were positive for the community, they had unintended consequences. Not everyone was on board with the decision.

Businesses said they started hurting for customers. Those coming into town to shop and dine said their stash of change kept running out so they drove off.

City council members weighed the pros and cons of keeping the cost as is, but ultimately decided 7-0 to lower the fee.

Meter costs will not be lowered until the law is officially changed next month.

The price is expected to go back up once multi-space meters are installed this spring. That means drivers can pay with credit cards instead of loose change.
