The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office says a man was killed when he was hit by a truck in Mechanicsville.

It happened about 7:40 p.m. Thursday on Budds Creek Road. Deputies say several people were trying to push a golf cart across the road.

Police say most of the people were stopped in the road because of oncoming traffic, but 51-year-old Johnny Durtche of Dumfries, Va., walked into the path of a truck driven by 28-year-old James Tayman III of Mechanicsville and was hit.

Durtche was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident is under investigation.
