Metro Chairman Calls for Overhaul of Board

The chairman of Metro's board of directors is calling for the overhaul of the board.

Amid major repairs, D.C. Councilman and Metro Chairman Jack Evans said the 16-member board is too large and too divided over issues particular to their own area.

"People tend to their jurisdiction at the expense of Metro," he said.

"You cannot serve two masters," he continued. "There's no other board in the country that's structured this way."

Evans did not say how the board should be changed.

"I'm throwing it out there for discussion," he said.

Metro has a $300 million deficit for next year, $18 billion in unfunded repairs and improvements, and more than $2 billion in pension liabilities.

The executive director of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, Chuck Bean, disagreed on how to handle Metro. The focus now should be on supporting General Manager Paul Wiedefeld, he said.

"We're halfway through SafeTrack and it's generally going well. We've got to get that job done first. That's the first priority," Bean said.

He agreed that the current Metro board needs to do better.

"They need to leave behind their parochial interests and work on the regional interests," Bean said.
