Maryland Commission Approves Plans for Prince George's County Regional Medical Center

Prince George’s County is getting a new hospital.

The Maryland Health Care Commission approved the certificate of need for the proposed Prince George’s County Regional Medical Center Thursday.

The hospital will be located in Largo Town Center, and is projected to cost approximately $650 million, according to Dimensions Healthcare System, a nonprofit hospital system that serves the county.

Plans for the hospital have been in the works for several years, and the state public works board approved the first set of funds for the hospital in 2014.

"Throughout the ups and downs of this process, we remained steadfast to our mission of improving healthcare delivery in Prince George’s County and the [Regional Medical Center] was vital component of our plan," County Executive Rushern Baker said in a statement.

There will be 231 beds, a full-service medical campus and a private practice on hospital grounds. In addition to Prince George's County, it will serve southern Maryland.

"This Regional Medical Center will improve healthcare options and outcomes in Prince George’s County and has already begun to spur transit-oriented economic development around the Largo Metro station," Baker said. "We are confident it will be the anchor of 'Downtown Largo' attracting brand new retail, residential, office space, and other transit-oriented development."

The county is billing the development as the other bookend on Metro's Blue Line like Tysons is in Virginia.

The 700,000-plus-square-foot hospital is expected to open in 2017.
