A man attempting to retrieve his tire from a travel lane on the Capital Beltway was struck by a SUV Tuesday night.
Police say the victim was driving east on Interstate 495 in Silver Spring when a wheel came off of his vehicle and struck another vehicle just before 10 p.m.
The man pulled over to the shoulder to exchange information with the other driver and call a tow truck. While waiting for the tow truck to arrive, the man tried to get the tire from the roadway but was struck by an SUV.
The victim, who was seriously injured, was transported to the hospital for treatment.
