Authorities say a Stafford County deputy was stabbed during an altercation that led to the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy early Friday. News4's Jackie Bensen reports.
Authories say a Stafford County deputy was stabbed during an altercation that led to the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy early Friday.
The incident began when police received a call about around 4 a.m. about an abandoned car near the Stafford/Fauquier county line.
When deputies arrived, they found an empty Hyundai sedan in a ditch at the intersection of Aquia and Tackett's Mill roads. The investigation led deputies to a home in the 12300 block of Tacketts Mill Road, about a quarter mile away.
There, officials say, some type of altercation occurred. Authorities say the teen had a knife, and an officer was wounded. That's when police opened fire, killing him.
Neighbors in the rural area say that traffic accidents are common at that intersection, but a shooting is unheard of there.
The teen was identified as 17-year-old Evan F. Newsom of Stafford.
Virginia State Police are continuing to investigate.
