Grab a fan! The longest heatwave of the summer begins Tuesday, as temperatures continue to climb.
The D.C. area will see temperatures in the low 90s for the rest of the week, but the high humidity will make it feel much warmer.
By Tuesday afternoon, it will feel close to 100 degrees.
There is a small chance for afternoon thundershowers Tuesday and Wednesday, but that chance increases Thursday when drier air pushes in from the west. Thursday's storms may be severe, bringing the risk of damaging winds and possible flooding to the area.
Humidity will decrease Friday and into the weekend. But temperatures will remain in the low to mid 90s each day.
There's only a very small chance for storms this weekend.
Here are some ways you can stay cool and prevent heat-related illnesses::
- If you have to be outside for a lengthy periods of time, don't over exert yourself.
- Take frequent breaks.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, lightly colored clothing.
- Do not leave children or pets inside vehicles.
- Check on friends and neighbors and have someone do the same for you.
