Families Displaced After Fire at Maryland Apartment Building

'Smoking materials' sparked the fire, officials say

Several families are displaced Wednesday night after "smoking materials" sparked a massive fire at an apartment building in Rockville, Maryland, fire officials say.

More than 85 firefighters responded to the fire at the Gables On Tuckerman apartment homes the 10700 block of Hampton Mill Terrace, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer said.

Flames tore through a third-floor balcony and the building was evacuated. The fire then spread to the attic area of the builidng.

No one was injured, Piringer said.

Piringer said "improperly discarded smoking materials" started the fire. Officials estimate the fire caused about $400,000 in damage.
