D.C. Police on Alert After 3 Shootings, Including 1 Homicide, in Petworth

D.C. police are on high alert after three shootings within hours of each other in the city's Petworth neighborhood, including one homicide.

The first two shootings were reported very early Tuesday, and apparently involved a group of suspects firing on cars at random.

At 2:15 a.m., a man driving a gray Camaro with Fraternal Order of Police license plates in the 1200 block of Ingraham Street was approached by a group of four men who began firing at the Camaro. At least one bullet struck a minivan parked nearby. No one was injured.

Fifteen minutes earlier, a similar group of men had fired on a white Ford Fusion near 9th and Jefferson streets NW. No one was injured.

The third shooting was reported in the 900 block of Delafield Place around 6 p.m., where police found 21-year-old Daniel Joseph Hinton slumped over in the driver's seat of a Kia Spectra stopped in the middle of the block.

He had been shot to death.

The car's engine was running and the lights were on when police arrived. A shot spotter gunfire sensor detected the sounds of multiple gunshots in the area, police said.

Police haven't yet confirmed whether the third shooting is related to the early morning shootings.

A neighbor who lives nearby said he's shocked.

"We never had these sort of random crimes on this block here," he said. "I've lived here almost nine years and we never had any problems except minor stuff. This is really extreme."
