Coastal Flood Advisory Through Saturday Afternoon

Scattered Showers, Storms Possible Throughout Weekend

A few days after flooding in Georgetown and rescues on the Potomac River, the rain may be cause for concern for some. A flood watch is in effect through 8 a.m. Saturday for Frederick and Washington counties in Maryland and parts of northwest Virginia and northeast West Virginia, including Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren and Frederick counties in Virginia. Moderate to locally heavy rain totaling 1-2 inches is expected in the areas under the watch, which could cause creeks and streams to rise out of their banks and potentially cause flooding in low-lying areas.

In and around D.C., expect only some scattered showers Friday.

A coastal flood advisory for the D.C. area will be in effect from 10 p.m. Friday until 4 p.m. Saturday. Winds and tides could cause flooding in low-lying areas. The next high tides along the Potomac River are 12:47 a.m. and 12:58 p.m. at the Washington Channel and 1:05 a.m. and 1:16 p.m. in Alexandria. No major flooding is expected, as it is only expected to be a 1-foot anomaly, meteorologist Doug Kammerer said.

Rain could continue through the weekend. Most of the rain Saturday will be in the morning, with a chance of a late storm, Kammerer said. Expect high temperatures around 70. High temperatures in the low 80s are likely Sunday, with a chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms again. Kammerer said Sunday will be mostly dry, with the best chance of precipitation closer to the Mason-Dixon Line.
