Girl Struck by Stray Bullet in Southeast DC

A suspect opened fire in front of the girl's home

A 6-year-old girl was shot in the ankle Thursday night in Southeast, D.C., police say.

D.C. Fire and EMS said the shooting happened about 9:45 p.m. in the 2700 block of Langston Place SE. A suspect opened fire in front of the girl's home while she and her family were coming back from getting groceries, neighbors said.

"To hear that a family was just coming home from grocery shopping, going in the house and then she's subjected to gun violence, and to be shot," ANC Commissioner Paul Trantham said.

Medics took the child to a hospital. She is expected to be OK.

Neighbors said they heard a burst of gunfire and the sound of squeling tires as the suspect drove off.

"To hear the gunshots, that was troubling," Curis Lee Watson said. "But people are not safe here."

No arrests have been made.
