"Two dollars! Two dollars!"

That's what Commuter Connections is now offering commuters who drive on three key routes for welcoming neighbors, friends or strangers into their cars.

'Pool Rewards, which started Monday, will give cash to commuters who currently travel alone when they agree to start or join a new carpool along any stretch of:

  • the Capital Beltway (I-495) from Bethesda to Tysons Corner (west bound in the morning, east bound in the evening);
  • the Beltway from the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (MD-295) to Interstate 270 (west bound in the morning, east bound in the evening); and,
  • Interstate 395 from the District across the 14th Street bridge into Northern Virginia (south bound in the morning, north bound in the evening).

If you're eligible for the three-month pilot program, you can earn $1 each way, or $2 a day.

That could buy you a small tea at the Corner Bakery... or one of their mini-chocolate chip scones... or a Krispy Kreme donut at 7-11... well, you get the idea.

If enough people sign up, the program could be extended to other area roads. So what are you waiting for?

"Two dollars!"
