Police have identified an injured toddler who was dropped off at a Marlyand hospital Sunday but are still working to confirm guardianship of the little girl, they said Tuesday.
A woman took the little girl to Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring on Sunday, believing she needed medical care, Montgomery County Police said. The woman told hospital personnel that she didn't know who the girl was.
"She was asked to babysit the child on Saturday by her sister and when she couldn't get in touch with her sister to ask about this child, she then brought the child to the hospital," Montgomery County police Sgt. Rebecca Innocenti said.
Hospital staff then alerted police.
The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) posted a photograph of the little girl with big brown eyes on their website, asking the public's help identifying her. The girl had visible injuries to the lower half of her body when she arrived at the hospital, according to the NCMEC.
Montgomery County Police have not released her name but said she was identified Tuesday morning. They have also identified one parent, but detectives still trying to determine who has legal guardianship of the child, police said.
"The detectives will confirm guardianship and also investigate the circumstances how this child came to be at this woman's home and certainly ensure that this child is being taken care of and has proper care," Innocenti said.
