Arlington Couple Slashed in Attempted Robbery

A man was seriously injured in Arlington early Sunday morning and a woman was cut when two men tried to rob them, police said.

The pair was walking on the 5900 block of Arlington Boulevard, near Kenmore Middle School, about 12:40 a.m. Sunday when a man tried to grab the woman's purse, Arlington County Police said.

The woman tried to hold on to her bag and was cut on one hand. The man she was with had been walking a few steps ahead of her. When he spun around to help her, another man jumped out of the bushes and viciously attacked the male victim, stabbed him in the chest and slashing his face, police said.

A man walking by saw the couple and called 911.

"The medics from the Arlington County Fire Department assisted and performed life-saving measures," police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said Tuesday.

The attackers ran off without stealing any items. The victims weren't able to give police a detailed description of the suspects, Sternbeck said. He warned locals not to fight thieves.

"We don't advise trying to protect -- whether it's your purse or a small amount of money -- especially when somebody is brandishing a knife and threatening," he said.
