Architects Picked for MLK Library Redesign

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray will announce Tuesday design team Mecanoo, Martinez and Johnson has been picked to revitalize the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, News4 has learned.

The announcement will be made Tuesday morning. Mecanoo, Martinez and Johnson were selected over two other firms.

The potentially $300 million project will redesign the 400,000 square foot interior of the 1970s library to modernize the building and add commercial, retail and residential space. The library has been deteriorating for years.

The historically projected exterior originally designed by noted architect Mies Van der Rohe will not significantly change.
