Alexandria Prepares For Future Flooding

The city of Alexandria, Va., is working on a plan to prevent flooding in Old Town.

Homes and businesses in the area are prone to flooding, even from the most minor storms.

City officials are considering a three-year, $6.5 million plan that would lower the risk.

The plan was discussed during a city council public hearing on Saturday.

It includes raising the shoreline in some areas by as much as six feet.

Parts of King Street, Union Street and the Strand near the waterfront would be elevated.

Floodgates would be added to other streets and drainage improvements would be also be made.

The City Council will discuss the plan in greater detail this October.
