One person is dead and at least 10 others were injured Wednesday afternoon in a multi-vehicle accident involving a Metrobus in Bethesda.

The incident occurred at about 4:15 p.m. on Rockville Pike at Alta Vista Road. Five vehicles, including a J-9 Metrobus, were involved in the crash.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck was traveling southbound on Rockville Pike when it crossed the median into the path of the Metrobus, which was traveling northbound on Rockville Pike. The two vehicles collided, and the Metrobus -- which was headed to Lake Forest Mall in Gaithersburg -- came to rest after striking a tree on the side of the roadway.

The driver of the pick-up truck, Nkonou Ayaovi Edorh, 49, of Silver Spring, Md., suffered fatal injuries. The driver of the Metrobus, Lennitta L Bryant, 41, of Silver Spring, was transported to a hospital with serious injuries. She is a 13-year veteran at WMATA.

Several Metrobus passengers also suffered injuries and were transported to local hospitals.

The person who died will be identified following next-of-kin notification.

The circumstances surrounding this collision remain under investigation. Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed this fatal collision to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 301-840-2435. Callers may remain anonymous.

Rockville Pike was to be closed in both directions between Cedar Lane and Pooks Hill Road for several hours.
