In March, the Urban Land Institute recognized DC’s Columbia Heights neighborhood in their annual Awards for Excellence along with 16 other finalists. The awards highlight innovative and successful land use projects across the country. Bethesda Row, the popular mixed use development in downtown Bethesda was also recognized. The ten winners will be announced today at ULI’s Real Estate Summit in Boston.

Once considered a no-man’s land because of the crime rate and the lack of development in the area, Columbia Heights’ transformation into a viable commercial and residential neighborhood over the past few years is well known. Much of this change has been attributed to the DCUSA shopping center that opened in 2008 and houses a Target, Best Buy and a Washington Sports Club among other establishments.

And if you thought that these places were particularly crowded when you went to get a new pair of earphones or a box of Cherrios, you’d be right. In the latest Northwest Current, Sedrick Muhammad, president of the South Columbia Heights Community Association, is quoted as saying that the Columbia Heights Best Buy is the second-busiest on the east coast and that the neighborhood boasts the second busiest Target in the country. The chain stores are bringing people together, folks!
