DC Celebrates its Independents

DC Independent Film Festival:

The end of award season left you feeling blue? Don't fret, the DC Independent Film Festival is just around the corner to cure those post-Oscar woes.

The 11-day festival, opening on March 4, showcases 117 independent films from around the world, in 26 themed sessions. Each day of film has a different theme, ranging from "food, glorious food" to "future shock." Tickets for individual days vary, but are usually around $11, which is less than seeing a big studio film any other day. Passes for multiple days range anywhere from $50 to $500.

Film isn't the only thing the festival has to offer. Some other notable events include an advocacy forum, master classes and seminars. Hosted by The Congressional Entertainment Industries Caucus, the "Filmakers on the Hill" advocacy forum will be focused on discussing key issues that impact independent film and the media industry. The first session will focus on the economic impact of independent film, and the second will look at independent film and sustainability. The sessions will be held from 10-11:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m on March 4.

The festival seminars are regulated to the weekends, when working aspiring filmmakers may be able to take their days off to learn more about their craft. The topics include the collision between gaming and film, finance and distribution, and writing for the screen, among others. Each seminar lasts two hours, and they are held at 12 p.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

Just watch the award shows for a glimpse of the rich and famous? A few celebrities will also be stopping by the District to celebrate independent film. Filmmaker Jeremy Gilley will be joined by Jude Law and Lenny Kravitz on opening night.
