Ovechkin, Capitals invade Redskins game with goofy helmets

We received an e-mail yesterday telling us that Alexander Ovechkin had been spotted by CBS cameras during yesterday's Cleveland Browns/Washington Redskins football game at FedEx Field, but that the announcers and producers ignored him.

Seeing this photo, that's understandable, as he looks preposterous to the point where this could have been confused for another outstanding Clinton Portis disguise. Or at the very least, the ghost of Red Grange.

Ovechkin and some of his Washington Capitals teammates came to the Redskins game yesterday, appearing on the local Comcast SportsNet pregame show and taking in the game.

Dan Steinberg of the DC Sports Bog was there, dutifully reporting on all the happenings. Nicklas Backstrom told Steins that he, Ovechkin and Mike Green had a "rule" that they would wear Redskins jerseys and faux helmets during the game. In many ways, this visual is funnier than anything in "Leatherheads."

Then there was the competition for the most hilarious quote from a Capitals player during interviews:

"I don't want to talk about hockey. I want to have fun with my teammates and go eat nachos and drink Coke." - Ovechkin

"I think he knows the same as me. Or less. It's probably going to be me and him just sitting there." - Backstrom, on Ovechkin's football knowledge.

We'd like to see more of these Capitals class trips around the D.C. area. May we suggest kayaking in Great Falls, frolicking in the National Zoo or exploring Colonial history at George Washington's Mount Vernon estate? As long as they're wearing their helmet hats. That's now mandatory.
