Wizards Celebrate Wes Unseld Jr.'S First Win as NBA Coach

Wizards celebrate Wes Unseld Jr.’s first win as NBA coach originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

Everyone on the Wizards knew the drill.

After they capped a season-opening 98-83 win over the Toronto Raptors at Scotiabank Arena on Wednesday night, they celebrated with their new coach in the only way they could.

They drenched him.

“They chose every cold bottle of water in the locker room,” Wes Unseld Jr. said with a grin. “And I got doused.”

The win was Unseld’s first as an NBA head coach and it came in style.

The Wizards won without shooting well from 3-point range, but played good defense and held the Raptors to just 37 points in the first half. Despite an early fourth quarter push, the Raptors never truly threatened to take the game over.

Unseld, whose last name is already legendary in the city, will head to his first game at Capital One Arena on Friday night against the Indiana Pacers with a win under his belt.

“It was exciting, it was electrifying,” Bradley Beal said. “We definitely realized this is his first win. It was super important to us. We kind of had it planned the whole day yesterday. It was good to be able to get him a nice first win here.”
