Only select friends and family of Washington Football Team players have had the chance to watch the club play at FedExField thus far in 2020 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
That could all be changing soon, according to team president Jason Wright.
When Washington hosts its Week 9 clash against the New York Giants on Nov. 8, as many as 3,500 fans could be in attendance, Wright told ABC7's Scott Abraham.
"We have a plan to bring back fans," Wright said. "If you want to pencil something on the calendar, I would look at the Giants week. That gives us the right time to prepare."
Washington does have a home game this upcoming weekend against the Dallas Cowboys, but Wright said the team isn't prepared to have fans in the stands just yet.
Prior to the start of the season, Washington was one of two teams to announce that they would play the entire 2020 slate in an empty arena.
However, when Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan announced last Friday that stadiums can open and fill 10% capacity, things changed.
FedExField seats nearly 80,000 people, meaning a maximum of 8,000 fans would be allowed under Hogan's order. But, Washington plays its home games in Prince George's County, where the current cap is set at 3,500 people for stadium gatherings.
Wright said Washington will follow the county's rule -- rather than the state's -- when deciding how many fans will attend.
"That’s what we’re moving toward and what we’re looking at doing after the bye week," Wright said.
