The Seattle Seahawks released a statement Wednesday condemning the actions of offensive lineman Chad Wheeler, who was arrested early Saturday morning on suspicion of felony domestic violence.

The 6-7, 310-pound Wheeler is accused of strangling his girlfriend until she lost consciousness, at one point using one hand to press against her nose and mouth to stop her from breathing, according to a police report obtained by ESPN. And when she regained consciousness, Wheeler responded by saying, "Wow, you're still alive." The report says the 5-9, 145-pound victim locked herself in a bathroom to call 911 and told police she was being "killed."

According to charging papers obtained by The Seattle Times, Wheeler was charged with first-degree domestic violence assault, domestic violence unlawful imprisonment and resisting arrest. According to the Times, the victim suffered a fractured humerus bone and dislocated elbow in her left arm, she exhibited multiple signs of strangulation, including lesions on her neck, and she also had swelling in her face that charging documents say doctors believed was the result of strikes and punches.

The victim said Wheeler, who was released Tuesday from King County Jail on $400,000 bond, has bipolar disorder but hadn't been taking his medicine.

“The Seahawks are saddened by the details emerging against Chad Wheeler and strongly condemn this act of domestic violence,” the team's statement read. “Our thoughts and support are with the victim. Chad is a free agent and no longer with the team.”

Wheeler, 27, was officially waived by the Seahawks on Wednesday. He released a statement, through a series of tweets, citing a "manic episode" for his actions.

"It is time for me to walk away from football and get the help I need to never again pose a threat to another," he said. "I cannot express my sorrow or remorse enough. I am truly ashamed."
