Report: Washington Requests to Interview 49ers Exec Martin Mayhew for GM Job

Report: WFT requests to interview 49ers exec Mayhew for GM job originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

The Washington Football Team has requested to interview San Francisco 49ers VP of Player Personnel Martin Mayhew for the team's vacant general manager job, according to a report from Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post.

Mayhew, 55, has been an NFL executive since 2001, spending time in both the front offices of the Detroit Lions and New York Giants before arriving in San Francisco in 2017. Mayhew served as the Lions GM from 2008-2015.

The current 49ers VP of Player Personnel was promoted to his current role in 2019 after spending two seasons as a senior personnel executive.

A former cornerback, Mayhew played four seasons for the Washington Football Team from 1989-1992, but has never worked with or under Washington head coach Ron Rivera.

Mayhew isn't the only name Washington is considering for the GM opening. NBC Sports Washington's JP Finlay reported on Tuesday the team also requested to interview Titans VP of Player Personnel Ryan Cowden.

Washington has been operating under a "coach-centric" approach since hiring Rivera last January, meaning he and owner Dan Snyder will have the final say in the GM hiring.
