Kyle Allen Knows How Dwayne Haskins Feels Getting Benched: ‘It Broke My Heart'

It's not easy to become a starting quarterback in the NFL, and when you finally get to that point and get benched, it hurts just that much more.

Dwayne Haskins was pulled for backup Kyle Allen and demoted to third-string quarterback after just four starts in 2020. It's a difficult situation for any quarterback, let alone a guy who was taken in the first round just two years ago.

But Haskins' replacement knows what it's like to get yanked and have to work his way back to the starting job. And to Allen, as he told Kevin Sheehan on 980 The Team Wednesday morning, he thinks adversity is useful in the long run.

"It's always tough, I've been in a lot of these situations in my career," Allen said. "I know the first time I had to go through it, it was tough and it broke my heart. And I know how much this means to Dwayne and I know it broke his heart but I think a little adversity for everyone is good.

"You can see him at practice trying to get better and helping out in the QB room too," he said. "So I think it's good for everyone to go through a little adversity and find out a little bit about themselves."

Allen's dealt with uncertainty with his job security for the last six years. He was a top recruit coming out high school but didn't get consistent opportunity at Texas A&M. Then when he transferred to Houston, he was benched after four games.

Allen went undrafted in 2018 and had to work his way from the ground up in Carolina before coming in for an injured Cam Newton last season. He flashed potential and he struggled with turnovers, and even though he was traded to Washington to be a backup, he became the starter after a month of games.
