A day after it was reported that Cleveland Indians pitcher Zach Plesac was sent home by the team to quarantine after he went out in Chicago on Saturday night with friends, the Indians announced that pitcher Mike Clevinger was sent home on Monday for violating team protocols as well.
Clevinger was set to start on Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs, but will now be replaced by Adam Plutko.
ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that Clevinger was with Plesac on Saturday night in Chicago, but then flew with the team on Sunday. While Clevinger's quarantine is not specified, Plesac is reportedly quarantining for 72 hours and facing testing every day.
Plesac and Clevinger's decision to break protocol is shocking for multiple reasons, besides the fact that it puts themselves and others in danger. The first is that MLB has tightened up its regulations as of late in order to try and limit players' exposure to the outside world. That leads to the second factor, which is that multiple teams have dealt with outbreaks that have postponed games.
