Redskins Changes QBs, Still Lose

Return of Grossman doesn't help offense

The song remains the same for the Redskins -- even if they changed their tune on quarterbacks.

Rex Grossman was the surprise starter on Sunday against Miami, but his presence did nothing to help coach Mike Shanahan's struggling offense as the Skins lost to the Dolphins, 20-9.

Grossman showed glimpses of the quarterback who led Washington a 3-1 record to start the season. But he also showed way too much of the quarterback who isn't mobile in the pocket and who has a penchant for throwing interceptions. His final line: 21 of 32 for 215 yards, two interceptions, three sacks and a QB rating of 58.7.

The win was just the second of the season for the hapless Dolphins. The loss for the Redskins extended the team's winless streak to five games. As 106.7 The Fan Redskins beat writer Grant Paulsen noted, as bad as Washington has been of late, this is actually the team's first five-game losing streak in the past 10 years.

Grossman couldn't do much more to help the Redskins' offense than the man he replaced. Beck did little to move the offense down the field the past couple of weeks. On Sunday, Grossman found a new favorite target in Leonard Hankerson, who caught eight balls for 106 yards before leaving the game with an apparent hip injury, but also found that with no running game and a suspect offensive line, touchdowns are extremely hard to come by.

Even when the Redskins' defense intercepted Matt Moore and gave the offense a first-and-goal on the Dolphins' 5 yard line, Grossman and Co. couldn't find a way to reach the end zone.  Ryan Torain ran up the middle twice for four yards, but a holding penalty pushed them back to the 10.  A pass to Roy Helu on third down got just two yards back, forcing the Skins to settle for a 26-yard field goal.

That field goal by Graham Gano came after he missed one earlier in the day from 50 yards.  He was 3 of 5 on the day.
