Davey Johnson was officially named the new manager of the Washington Nationals on Sunday afternoon.

General Manager Mike Rizzo said in a statement Sunday:

"We could have absolutely no better choice to lead the Nationals at this time than Davey Johnson. He knows the game, he knows our players, he knows our fans, he knows the Washington, DC area, and he knows exactly what we need to be doing to build the Nationals into a contender.”

Interim manager John McLaren will run the team for Sunday's series finale against the White Sox and will be reassigned within the organization, Rizzo said.

Rizzo said that Johnson would be the skipper starting Monday.

McLaren will assist Rizzo in scouting and other duties.

Johnson has been a senior advisor with the Nationals since 2009.  In 14 seasons as a Major League manager, Johnson's teams won five division titles and one pennant.  His Mets team won the World Series in 1986.
