Norton to Donate Pay During a Shutdown

There's one thing that seems to get a lot of Americans hot under the collar when talk turns to a possible government shutdown.  Thanks to a law on the books, Capitol Hill lawmakers will still get paid.

D.C.'s representative plans to donate her earnings.

The office of Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) released a statement Friday that read in part,  "in solidarity with three different sets of her constituents -- federal agency employees, D.C. government employees and congressional employees -- she will donate her salary for every day the federal government is shut down."

The money will go to "non-profit organizations that are working to preserve and expand the District’s self-governing rights, for voting rights and for statehood."

In addition, Norton's office said she used her congressional authority to declare her entire staff essential. It means they will be on the job during a shutdown but will not be guaranteed pay.
