It's the most wonderful time of the The Voice's third season: The battle rounds!
The NBC hit series is chugging right along and the four coaches' teams are starting come together. In the Oct. 15 episode, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton continued to make some hard decisions between two members of their teams.
Oh, and the coaches got their steal on! (How awesome is the new steal option?!)
U.S. & World
The day's top national and international news.
The first battle of the night is between Julio Cesar Castillo and Theresa Griffin, whom Blake pairs against each other on "Conga!" After their duet, Blake admits, "I don't really know who won," before choosing mariachi singer Julio because he put in the most work from rehearsals up until the performance. Don't worry about Theresa, 42, though as Cee Lo steals her from Blake, keeping her in the game.
For his team's second matchup, the country crooner pairs Lelia Broussard and Suzanna Choffel. "It's the most obvious pairing of a battle I've ever seen," Blake says of teaming the two indie artists up on "Dog Days Are Over." Christina calls the duet "really beautiful" and says the girls "are a great match," Cee Lo says their talent is "overflowing," and Adam regrets not fighting for Suzanna in the blind auditions.
Blake says this decision "sucks," but chooses Suzanna as the winner of the battle; Surprisingly, no one steals Lelia as Adam explains they have a limited amount and he's saving his for someone special. Hmmm...
Dez Duron, The former football player who came back to audition after being sent home by the coaches in season two, is set to go up against Paulina, a 16-year-old diva-in-the-making. The attractive duo is singing "Just the Way You Are," because it's a "sweet song," Christina explains. Cee Lo says Dez is the "total package," while Adam says both performances on their own were "a little inconsistent," but gives the edge to Dez. Blake commends Dez for all the progress he's made. In the end, Christina agrees with her coaches and chooses to keep Dez on her team. Cee Lo, Adam and Blake pass on stealing Paulina.
For her next battle, Christina pits quiet teen Joselyn Rivera against Egyptian-born Sylvia Yacoub on "Best Thing I Never Had" because it's a "song that requires pretty powerful vocals." After their performance, Cee Lo commends both ladies; Adam calls their duet "great" and says they're "gnarly good singers," and Blake agrees, saying both artists great, but picks Joselyn as the winner. Though she's upset with pairing them together, in the end Christina picks Sylvia.
Fret not Joselyn fans, as Adam and Blake both want to steal the teen with the powerhouse vocals. Blake points out that he tried to get her during the blind auditions and Adam says he can envision her on the radio. Blake's final statement: "I love you." Joselyn chooses Adam as her new coach. "It's the end of her career!" Blake says of her decision.
The Maroon 5 singer decides to pair Benji, the ex-race car driver, and Sam James, a bartender who wants to play music full-time, together. Adam chooses "a wild card" of a song to keep it entertaining: "You Give Love a Bad Name" by Bon Jovi.
After a rocking duet, Blake says Benji won the battle and Christina agrees, saying she loved his yelling and screaming. Cee Lo compliments Benji, saying he was the "clear lead." Adam decides to advance Sam onto the knockout rounds and although all three of the other coaches showered Benji with praise, no one decides to steal him.
Team Cee Lo
The Midwest "beard crew" Todd Kessler and Nicholas David are up next and the two have clearly developed a friendship already. Cee Lo gives them Hall &Oates "She's Gone." Nicholas admits it's hard for him to be competitive with Todd. (Awww, BFF alert!)
Adam calls their performance "awesome" and tells the guys their voices "sound amazing together." Christina and Blake also praise both singers, but highlight Nicholas' "unique quality." According to Cee Lo, the winner of the battle is "Saint Nick" aka Nicholas. Again, the three other coaches don't utilize their steal option.
(E! and NBC are both part of the NBCUniversal family.)
