About 30 contract landscape workers at Arlington National Cemetery have gone on strike, seeking better pay and benefits.
Larry Doggette, business manager for Local 572 of Laborers' International Union of North America, said the strike began Monday and will remain in place at least through Tuesday.
The workers are employed by two different contractors, Greenleaf Services Inc. and The Davey Tree Expert Company.
Doggette said workers are seeking better benefits and currently are paid $13 an hour with no paid sick leave and minimal vacation time.
Greenleaf says its workers are paid between $17 and $19 an hour, the prevailing wage under federal law. The company is using replacement workers during bargaining.
Cemetery officials said the dispute is between workers and private employers and they have no position on the matter.
