Temperatures are set to climb into the 90s this week, but the cooling systems in some Metro stations will remain turned off.
The pipes in the cooling systems for the Dupont Circle and Farragut North stations are so leaky that the systems cannot be used, Metro officials said Monday.
A permanent fix would require tearing up part of busy Connecticut Avenue. So a temporary solution is in the works, Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld said.
"We're pushing as hard as we can to get that done," he said.
News4's Adam Tuss got rare access on Monday to the systems meant to help cool the stations. For the Dupont Circle station, the cooling system stretches down 30 feet.
Metro has a total of 32 "chiller plant" cooling systems. The others are in good shape, Metro says. Officials regularly check the water pressure to be sure.
